• Provides basic daily husbandry, food and water for animals in assigned area in accordance with department and area standards
• Observes behavior and physical condition of animals, and reports concerns to area supervisor
• Transfers animals between enclosures in accordance with department and area standards, and follows established safety guidelines

• Completes daily records for tracking animal health, animal behavior, enrichment and training

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: 

• Bachelor’s degree in zoology, biology, or a related field of study strongly preferred.

Experience/Training:      

• At least one year of animal care experience with applicable species preferred
• Zoo experience preferred (paid or unpaid)
• Understanding of current trends in animal training and behavior management
• Able to collect and collate data for studying animal behavior
• Familiarity with electronic communication and record-keeping

General Summary: The Hospital & Conservation Keeper will provide expert care including handling and training of hospitalized and quarantined animals, both from the Zoo’s collection as well as wildlife patients and their associated treatment and/ or holding areas. The Hospital & Conservation Keeper is also responsible for maintaining clean and well-functioning animal spaces and rooms within the hospital building. The Hospital & Conservation Keeper also actively supports the conservation and research programs of the Zoo including the Eastern box turtle project and headstarting programs. Additionally, the Hospital & Conservation Keeper will support the Zoo’s mission to save wildlife and protect wild places and contribute to its environmental, social, governance sustainability, conservation, education, and DEAI (Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion) goals.

Essential Functions:

• Observe changes in animals’ appetite, disposition, habits, and in physical appearance and/or excreta to detect indications of stress or illness;
• Provide specialized care to ill hospitalized patients to reduce stress and aid in recovery;
• Inspect enclosures, fencing, pools, and furniture for cleanliness and/or structural defects and to perform minor repairs as needed;
• Prepare diets for animals, clean and fill water containers, and place food in exhibits at specified times;
• Clean enclosures and associated animal areas according to the area protocols or as directed by the Senior Supervisory Veterinarian;
• Transfer animals in accordance with Zoo policy and standards from one enclosure to another for husbandry purposes while adhering to Zoo safety protocols;
• Provide species appropriate and approved enrichment to animals;
• Plan, communicate, and execute specific and specialized training programs in conjunction with animal department staff for hospitalized collection animals and quarantined animals;
• Setup species-appropriate short-term enclosures for a variety of species for sick or quarantined animals;
• Provide care for confiscated patients when presented to the Zoo for care;
• Provide care to wildlife patients when presented to the Zoo;
• Support Zoo’s conservation programs including the Eastern box turtle monitoring project, and Wood Turtle and Alleghany Woodrat Headstarting Projects;
• Maintain familiarity with all animal recapture and restraint equipment;
• Capture and restrain animals for routine veterinary, emergency, husbandry, and management procedures;
• Assist with medical care procedures and administer medication as directed;
• Provide routine maintenance of facilities and minor repair of equipment, exhibits, and all animal and staff areas of the Zoo Hospital, excluding the procedure rooms, and including work orders as needed;
• Maintain and clean all animal and staff areas of Zoo Hospital excluding the procedure rooms, offices, and lobby and library area on a weekly basis and empty trash and recyclables as needed;
• Provide general maintenance of grounds in and around the Zoo Hospital;
• Maintain pest management strategies;
• Maintain structural safety equipment such as fire extinguishers, eye wash stations and emergency shower on a monthly basis;
• Coordinate facilities and outside contractors for building maintenance and projects, including escorting and careful monitoring of facilities and contractor activities in animal areas of the Zoo Hospital and report activities and updates to Hospital Clinical Manager;
• Work with other hospital staff to plan and design hospital renovations and equipment needs;
• Act as a member of the Animal Recapture Team as needed and directed;
• Drive off Zoo grounds as needed to deliver or pick up samples, equipment, and carcasses;
• Assist in the preparation and clean-up of procedures and surgical equipment; process laboratory samples, prepare medications and any other veterinary assistant duties as needed;
• Support the Zoo's mission to save wildlife and protect wild places and contribute to its environmental, social, and governance sustainability goals;
• Promote the mission of the Maryland Zoo;
• Perform other duties as assigned; and

• Maintain reports on all animal conditions in daily reports in ZIMS;
• Maintain communication between members of the Hospital & Conservation Keeper team to ensure consistent patient care;
• Provide regular updates to the Hospital Clinical Manager and other veterinary staff on the condition and status of the animals in the hospital; and
• Attend required Zoo staff meetings.

• Maintain inventory and order animal food and supplies from commissary needed for the Zoo Hospital and staff;
• Maintain hospital vehicle fleet, including registration and inspection needs;
• Submit work orders for hospital building needs;
• Track patient needs such as fecal samples and weights based on care sheets and as directed by the Hospital Clinical Manager;
• Coordinate with Hospital Clinical Manager and Hospital & Conservation keeper specialist to maintain care sheets, diet sheets, exit forms for hospitalized, quarantined, and wildlife patients; and
• Monitor and maintain equipment to ensure the tools remain in good working condition.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

• Bachelor’s degree in zoology, biology, veterinary science, or related field required.

Experience/Training:

• Three years of paid or unpaid animal experience, in a zoological institution or veterinary clinic preferred;
• Basic knowledge of Google Suite, Microsoft Office software programs and data entry; and,
• Valid driver’s license.

• Assist with completing daily operations checklist on zoo shuttle and train;
• Use train and shuttle intercoms to greet and welcome guests, provide safety instructions, and make any other necessary announcements;
• Monitor guests’ behavior to ensure their safety on and around the shuttle, train, mobility vehicle and carousel;
• Load and unload responsibilities associated with Zoo shuttle, train, mobility vehicle and carousel;

General Summary: The Parking Security Officer will direct vehicles and greet guests in the parking lots, provide safety resources and work in zoo areas, as assigned. • Open and close parking lots as necessary;
• Monitor all parking areas to prevent break-ins and/or vandalism of vehicles and Zoo property;
• Keep all parking areas and entrance areas clean and free of litter;
• Place directional signs, cones and barricades as needed;
• Direct vehicles and pedestrians with flags and other hand-held devices;
• Work in and/or help out in any aspect of Zoo operations as directed when appropriate;
• Ensure guest safety at all times;
• Perform other duties as assigned; and,
• Adhere to all policies and procedures of the Zoo.

• Greet guests and respond appropriately to guests’ questions, comments, or concerns in a friendly, professional, and informed manner;
• Monitor unauthorized persons and loitering in or around the parking lots and notify Dispatch and/ or management of suspicious persons or activities;

• Contact an appropriate Security staff member necessary to resolve security issues by radio contact as needed to communicate information.

General Summary:  The Relief Keeper is responsible for providing care and maintenance to collection animals and their associated exhibits and holding areas. Relief Keepers may be assigned to work in any of the animal areas to meet business needs.  Therefore, this person must be knowledgeable and comfortable working with a variety of species on a regular basis. Relief Keepers are expected to support Animal Keeper staff and Management in the observation of collection animals, by paying special attention to health, safety, dietary consumption, and behavioral abnormalities. General Summary: The Creative Services Coordinator is responsible for assisting with the production of graphic design projects for the Zoo's advertising, marketing, and signage. Outputs include brochures, banners, temporary and permanent signage, digital, web, and email marketing. This position reports to the Director of Creative Services. Additionally, the Creative Services Coordinator will support the Zoo's mission to save wildlife and protect wild places and contribute to its environmental, social, governance sustainability, conservation, education and DEAI (Diversity, Equity, Accessibility and Inclusion) goals.

Primary Function:

• Assist with the production of all in-house design work including publications, signage, advertising, and on-grounds graphics;
• Assist with developing and maintaining consistent visual identities to enhance marketing initiatives;
• Assist with project work flow, including deliverable dates and vendor management and billing;
• Collaborate with Zoo departments to implement visual solutions for needs relating to events, signs, and marketing requests;
• Assist with email marketing design;

• Manage all aspects of the Zoo’s traditional and digital advertising, including tactics, placing advertisements, KPI-driven reporting, data synthesis, and billing;
• Oversee the Digital Media Coordinator and the Zoo’s digital media content creation, posting, and comment response for social media, online reviews, and interactive content on the website;
• Support video and photo content to enhance the Zoo’s engagement;
• Ensure accurate representation of the Zoo’s branded voice in all external facing digital communications;
• Manage the annual calendar, content, and execution of Zoo email communications;
• Manage and improve email capture systems and subscription databases;
• Manage website messaging and effectiveness. Monitor site analytics, and conduct critical assessments to analyze return on investment, opportunities for growth and areas for improvement. Provide relevant data and reports to internal departments on a regular basis;

General Summary: The Security Officer is a significant position responsible for representing the organization and providing a safe and secure environment for all internal and external customers and enforcing all policies at The Maryland Zoo. Essential Functions:

Primary Functions:

• Responsible for rotating throughout all buildings, grounds and all animal areas and reporting suspicious conditions or unusual occurrences to Security Captain or Supervisor either in a vehicle or on foot;
• Respond to all requests for first aid, CRP, and/ or AED from guests or employees;
• Attend to the needs of the individual requesting assistance in a calm, professional, and ethical manner;
• Respond to security related incidents occurring on zoo property, set the tone of enforcement in interactions, mitigate and defuse situations;
• Respond to all alarms as dispatched;
• Lead and manage all employee or guest related incidents, providing detailed investigative information, witnesses, and accurate location(s) on reports;
• Responsible for ensuring work related incidents are reported, investigated, appropriate medical attention is sought and appropriate departments are contacted;
• Responsible for maintaining records of employee or guest related incidents including after-hours calls;
• Responsible for providing guest control, including challenging situations;
• Participate in a rotation on the Dispatch post located in the Security office which will include, but is not limited to, monitoring all Zoo activity, and deploying fellow Security officers to the scene of activity as needed; facilitating 911 calls and centralized Code Alpha and Code Beta communication needs; monitoring and communicating severe weather conditions; coordinating cab transportation for employee related incidents and accidents; and documenting and recording activities as appropriate;
• Practice good safety awareness and ensure guest safety at all times;
• Perform other related duties as assigned by management;
