• Act as a lead trainer for the daily operations custodial staff at the Zoo to ensure maximum guest service;
• Maintain sanitary conditions of the non-public and public restrooms within the Zoo grounds;
• Order janitorial and bathroom supplies, store and stock supplies, and distribute appropriately;
• Stock specified areas with necessary supplies on at least a weekly basis;
• Clean all rooms and/or rental spaces as assigned, including walls, floors and windows;
• Sweep, mop, strip wax, and buff floors, sweep and hose walkways;
• Remove trash from public areas, empty trash cans, and take debris to dump;
• Check light bulbs periodically and replace as needed;
• Implement pest management strategies;
• Wear appropriate personal protective gear provided by the Zoo;
• Maintain knowledge of and comply with blood borne pathogens and zoonotic disease prevention protocols and procedures;
• Assist with event setup and breakdown throughout the Zoo.
• Operate company truck and golf cart to successfully perform duties on campus
• Perform minor grounds maintenance such as snow removal and spreading ice melt.
• Utilize small engine equipment as needed.
• Provide guests with information on all aspects of the Zoo experience such as exhibits, on-ground activities (including times and locations), routes through the Zoo, construction, shuttles, and membership information;

Essential Functions:

• Enter invoices into Accounts Payable for State Funded capital items and prepare for review by the Deputy CFO the necessary State submissions;
• Track Capital Project progress and completion to maintain accurate records for Construction in Progress, Fixed Assets, Retainage, Depreciation and State Funded Capital Projects
• Assist Deputy CFO with financial audit preparations;
• Record and review all disbursements (including ACH and bank drafts) related to the Maryland Zoological Society, Inc.; ensure proper coding and ordering, appropriate supporting documentation, and authorization/approval;
• Simultaneous enter invoices for payment and perform a detailed review of vendor and invoice details for accuracy, discrepancies and ensure proper coding to general ledger
• Analyze and review liabilities within Accounts Payable ledger to determine weekly checks to be paid and ensure checks are disbursed in a timely manner
• Distribute Petty Cash reimbursements to employees after approval from Finance and submit petty cash replenishments for approval in accounting software.
• Distribute, collect and submit purchasing card statements monthly to CFO for review;
• Maintain purchasing card program by collecting purchase card agreements and tax exemption card agreements for new users, adjust and monitor credit limits as needed, and terminate accounts upon a user’s departure from the organization;
• Maintain an accurate and complete filing system of all accounts payable documents to include “paid” and “open invoices”;
• Liaison with all Department budget managers for any and all financial issues, including system training, transaction research and support;
• Records archive management of vendor records, including contact and contract information, W-9s, and certificates of insurance;
• Review Vendor account details to ensure information for IRS 1099 reporting is complete: prepare annual 1099 forms in an accurate and timely manner for the Deputy CFO’s review;
• Records archive management of State Funded Capital Projects including state approval letters, contracts, change orders and direct pay submissions;
• Review vendor list on a monthly basis and request copies of invoices for further processing;
• Review prepaid reconciliation and support documentation monthly and record monthly activity to general ledger;
• Prepare accrued expense schedule and record appropriate expenses on a monthly basis;
• Promote the mission of the Zoo;
• Perform other duties as assigned; and,
• Adhere to all policies and procedures of the Zoo.

• Complete all necessary paperwork related to funding and ensure the collection and remittance of all payment requests for appropriate capital projects; and,

• Meet guidelines of the Cash Discrepancy Policy on a consistent basis;
• Ensure PCI compliance is met;

General Summary: The Security Officer is a significant position responsible for representing the organization and providing a safe and secure environment for all internal and external customers and enforcing all policies at The Maryland Zoo. Additionally, the Security Officer will support the Zoo’s mission to save wildlife and protect wild places and contribute to its environmental, social, governance sustainability, conservation, education, and DEAI (Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion) goals.

Hours of Shift: 9:30 AM - 5:30 PM

Essential Functions:

Primary Functions:

• Responsible for rotating throughout all buildings, grounds and all animal areas and reporting suspicious conditions or unusual occurrences to Security Captain or Supervisor either in a vehicle or on foot;
• Respond to all requests for first aid, CRP, and/ or AED from guests or employees;
• Attend to the needs of the individual requesting assistance in a calm, professional, and ethical manner;
• Respond to security related incidents occurring on zoo property, set the tone of enforcement in interactions, mitigate and defuse situations;
• Respond to all alarms as dispatched;
• Lead and manage all employee or guest related incidents, providing detailed investigative information, witnesses, and accurate location(s) on reports;
• Responsible for ensuring work related incidents are reported, investigated, appropriate medical attention is sought and appropriate departments are contacted;
• Responsible for maintaining records of employee or guest related incidents including after-hours calls;
• Responsible for providing guest control, including challenging situations;
• Participate in a rotation on the Dispatch post located in the Security office which will include, but is not limited to, monitoring all Zoo activity, and deploying fellow Security officers to the scene of activity as needed; facilitating 911 calls and centralized Code Alpha and Code Beta communication needs; monitoring and communicating severe weather conditions; coordinating cab transportation for employee related incidents and accidents; and documenting and recording activities as appropriate;
• Practice good safety awareness and ensure guest safety at all times;
• Perform other related duties as assigned by management;

• Responsible for communicating effectively with staff and the public regarding standard operating procedures;

• Submit written reports, without exception, of all incidents and activities occurring on Zoo property and in the immediate perimeter area (includes parking lot);
• Monitor radios to ensure effective communication;
• Contact an appropriate Security staff member necessary to resolve security issues by radio contact as needed to communicate information; 
• Attend meetings and represent the Zoo on various committees; and,
• Maintain confidentiality and integrity of information disclosed, accidentally discovered or communicated as an Officer, with or without specific instruction to do so, of employees, guests, volunteers, etc.

• Assist in organizing breaks for all assigned employees while ensuring adequate staffing levels to control attendance flow; and,

• Maintains daily electronic records to track animal behavior and well-being over time
• Attends annual welfare assessments and submits regular welfare evaluations
• Participates in data collection for approved behavior and research projects
• Participates in animal medical procedures as directed by the area supervisor
• Participates in animal escape drills and incidents as directed by the recapture coordinator
• Conducts daily inspections of animal facilities, animal equipment and area buildings for structural defects and potential safety issues, and reports concerns to area supervisor
• Performs minor repairs and maintenance of animal facilities, animal equipment and area buildings as needed
• Maintains cleanliness of animal facilities, area buildings, public spaces and back of house areas

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: 

• Bachelor’s degree in zoology, biology, or a related field of study strongly preferred.

• At least one year of animal care experience with applicable species preferred

• Understanding of current trends in animal training and behavior management
• Able to collect and collate data for studying animal behavior
• Familiarity with electronic communication and record-keeping

• Minors (14 to 17 years of age) may be considered for employment by the Human Resources Department at the Zoo.  However, minors are required to furnish an authorized work permit agreement with the necessary signatures to legally work at the Zoo. 

Experience/Training:

• Provides basic daily husbandry, food and water for animals in assigned area in accordance with department and area standards
• Observes behavior and physical condition of animals, and reports concerns to area supervisor
• Transfers animals between enclosures in accordance with department and area standards, and follows established safety guidelines
• Provides approved enrichment to animals in compliance with behavior team requirements
• Participates in approved training programs in compliance with behavior team requirements
• Maintains daily electronic records to track animal behavior and well-being over time
• Attends annual welfare assessments and submits regular welfare evaluations
• Participates in data collection for approved behavior and research projects
• Participates in animal medical procedures as directed by the area supervisor
• Participates in animal escape drills and incidents as directed by the recapture coordinator
• Conducts daily inspections of animal facilities, animal equipment and area buildings for structural defects and potential safety issues, and reports concerns to area supervisor
• Performs minor repairs and maintenance of animal facilities, animal equipment and area buildings as needed
• Maintains cleanliness of animal facilities, area buildings, public spaces and back of house areas
• Implements pest control measures as needed, and in accordance with the Zoo’s pest control program
• Complies with all AZA standards and USDA regulations
• Adheres to all policies and procedures of the department and the Zoo
• May train new staff on daily area routines with oversight from higher level keepers or manager.

Communication (Internal and External):

• Completes daily records for tracking animal health, animal behavior, enrichment and training
• Reviews area records and updates in order to stay informed of new developments and changes in assigned area
• Checks Zoo email regularly for updates from department and Zoo management
• Provides area supervisor with timely updates on animal concerns
• Actively participates in team meetings, discussions and debriefings
• Adheres to the Zoo’s communication policy regarding social media posts and confidentiality
• Enhances the guest experience by actively engaging with visitors
• Supports the Zoo’s mission by sharing the organization’s conservation messages with visitors and the general public

Management of Resources (financial, human resources, facilities):

• Proper storage and use of animal food items and animal medications
• Proper use and care of Zoo radios and cell phones, and timely reporting of issues
• Safe use of Zoo vehicles and timely reporting of issues, including any accidents
• Maintenance and safe use of tools and minor equipment, including kitchen knives

• Performs general maintenance tasks, including lighting, drywall repair, painting, carpentry, and furniture movement.
• Conduct scheduled inspections and servicing of equipment, and utilities to prevent breakdowns and ensure efficiency.
• Respond promptly to calls throughout the facility and perform necessary repairs.
• Change filters, clean drains and gutters, and ensure proper functioning of systems supporting building operations.
• Maintain tools, equipment and supplies in an orderly and functional manner.
• Install and repair signage as needed ensuring proper placement.
• Perform all tasks in compliance with company policy and safety guidelines.
• Perform other tasks and projects as assigned.

Communication:

• Publish a daily report of worked performed and any current problems/issues/challenges.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• 5+ years of experience working in building operations or maintenance.

Experience/Training:

• Previous automotive experience, including maintaining and/or repairing items such as golf carts, small engines, or trucks is a plus.
• Valid driver’s license a must.
• CDL driver’s license is a plus.
• Experience maintaining and repairing a variety of HVAC systems is a plus.
